Suzuki Sales Surge under the Clean Car Discount Programme

Strong demand for Suzuki’s fuel efficient range of affordable vehicles has seen the brand reach record market share levels. With a number of models receiving rebates under the Clean Car Discount programme, and no models in the Suzuki range receiving a penalty, more customers than ever are turning to Suzuki in a time of rising living costs.

Taking 9 per cent share of the total passenger/SUV market in July, Suzuki was also the third best selling passenger and SUV marque. Since the commencement of the revised Clean Car Discount programme in April, Suzuki has been averaging 747 registrations per month which equates to 8.2% share over the period. Whereas the total market has reduced by 20 per cent over the same period.

The Suzuki Swift range has rebates up to $3,160 under the Clean Car Discount programme helping to lift the model’s light segment market share to 31.0% since April. Selling 406 vehicles in April and retaining strong sales position, the model continues to dominate the segment being the highest seller since 2016. The thrifty 1.2 GL models are priced from $21,990 + ORCs with choice of manual transmission or CVT continue as the most popular Swift variant.

The trendy Jimny 4WD, Suzuki’s second best selling model, continues to be an in-demand model with sales up a healthy 9.9 per cent for the January to July period compared to the same period in 2021. The most popular Jimny variant is the Sierra version with automatic transmission, underlining the fact that the model is not only a highly competent off-road vehicle but also ideal for city and urban motoring.

Sales of the Ignis super-compact SUV for the year to date period were up 6.9 per cent while the popular Vitara SUV, with the option of two or four wheel drive, registered its best month of the year after shortages of the versatile European built model. Vitara sales in July were up 12 per cent compared to the same month last year with the 1.4 litre turbocharged model with six speed automatic transmission proving to be the most popular.

“With buoyant sales of all our models and the new stylish S-Cross SUV just coming on stream, our product lineup is in good shape to meet the demands of customers in the current economic climate,” said Gary Collins, General Manager of Motor Vehicle for Suzuki New Zealand. “We are constantly improving the technology, safety, comfort and fuel efficiency in our vehicles, while still making it easy to own an affordable and reliable car.”

In addition to the positive Suzuki sales in New Zealand year to date, the brand is also doing well internationally,” said Collins. Global Suzuki production for the first half of 2022 was up 4.8 per cent to 1.555 million units and production of Suzukis outside Japan increased by 9.5 per cent compared to the same period last year. Global Suzuki sales for the same six months increased by 2 per cent with overseas sales rising by 7.8 per cent.
