Redefining Adventure: Women behind the Wheel

Meet Jade Maloyd, a university student with a passion for taking the road less travelled and photography. Jade recently caught our attention with a short documentary that delves in to the world of women in the 4WD community. Titled ‘Redefining Adventure: Women behind the Wheel’, this is a collaboration between Jade and Chics Off Road 4X4 (COR4X4) filmed at the Auckland Off Road Adventure Park.

Originating in Australia, COR4X4 is a women’s 4WD group that has created a safe space for women who find themselves in this male dominated sport. Whether you’re a total newbie, or a 4WD master, there’s a place for everyone, and their network has managed to skip over the ditch and has found itself a following here in New Zealand.

We caught up with Jade to talk about this latest project with COR4X4, her Suzuki Escudo (also known as Grand Vitara) and her best tips for those who want to get out there and give it a go.

Tell us a bit about you and what you do.

I am currently a university student studying at AUT but have been a photographer for the past six years. I got into 4WDing through my brother (he started off with a Suzuki as well) and have been doing it for just over a year.

Tell us a bit about your Suzuki. What is your favourite feature and does it have a nickname?

Berniese is a 1993 Suzuki Escudo, I bought her at the end of 2020 and have spent the last few years building her up. I like to call her dirty Bernie. I love how small she is and how she literally fits everywhere we go.

What led you to making this short documentary?

At first it was for a university assignment about collaboration with a person or organisation, but it soon turned into shining a light on COR4X4 and how much of an impact this group has made over here in NZ.

Through the medium of film, we are hoping to raise awareness about 4WDing beyond its often-misunderstood reputation. It’s more than driving off road, as it encompasses travel, exploration, and rich experiences.

However, for women, entering this sport it can be daunting, and intimidating. Starting out on your own and finding support and building your confidence can be challenging. This is where the COR4x4 community play a pivotal role. They have created a nurturing environment, enabling women to break free from their shells, develop skills, and find their voice in the 4WD world.

What's next on your agenda?

Bernie is currently getting her gearbox replaced but once she’s up and running again, we will probably head up North to do some exploring, and then later in the year I’ll be taking her to Tukino Ski field to play in the snow.

Are you always behind the camera?

I’d say about 99% of the time I am behind the camera. I absolutely love getting the action shots! 4WDing has really opened a whole new world of photography for me. You can check out more photos on my Instagram page - Wild Drive Photography.

What’s something that may surprise people about 4WDing?

When going down steep hills, you can’t brake. It goes against everything you think you know but you have to trust your 4WD, put it in low and let the engine do the braking itself.

What’s your best tip for 4WDing?

Keep your car well maintained. It gets put through a lot and you have got to keep it clean and healthy so you can keep sending it up these tracks.

What advice would you give to a woman (or anyone) wanting to learn more about off-roading?

Don’t be afraid to get out there and give it a go! There are so many people in this industry (men and women) that are so supportive and are happy to help you learn. I have made some amazing friends by doing this.
