Fashion, Art, Music... and a Suzuki Jimny? The Coolest Collab You Didn’t See Coming!
A quick intro by G Star Entertainment on Great Barrier Island over the summer, led husband and wife duo Jaimie Webster Haines and Nathan Haines to fall in love with the Suzuki Jimny 5-Door. Struck by its simple, iconic design, they could envision just how easy the Jimny could fit into their daily lives.
Fast forward a few months and their dreams have come true, with a Jimny on loan from Suzuki. We caught up with them to hear all about their first month on the road.
Tell us a bit about yourselves, your backgrounds and what you do.
Nathan - We are a creative couple that has been together for 21 years this April! Our world is art - I’m a musician, DJ, producer and composer with a recording studio, and Jaimie is clothing designer and DJ.
We often work together on projects and performances, and our home is full of books and art. We are also parents to our son Zoot who is 10 years old.
Jaimie - I run Planet Jaimie which is a lifestyle venture that houses our own clothing label, Jaimie, and fuses music, art and photography under the one roof. I work alongside my husband Nathan on many events for fashion, food and sport, music festivals and private parties. We thread this into Planet Jaimie working with the many wonderful musicians, producers and DJ’s worldwide as a part of our community. We also curate Planet Jaimie playlists which we have done for Suzuki!
Nathan runs Zoot Music which helps to facilitate this and there are many more exciting things to come - watch this space! I am also a mum to our wonderful 10yr old son, Zoot Haines - life is full!
What are you passionate about?
Nathan - ART! Art feeds my soul. My life revolves around music 24/7 - I am in the service of the music. I am that passionate about it. Its’ a natural extension of the way I live my life and I hope people can hear that in the music I play and when I perform and DJ.
Jaimie - Joie de vivre! Art is life! Love and connection is in all the things that we do – the skillset of humans and how we are really capable of so much. I am also very passionate about attention to detail and quality and excellence in your chosen field and striving and working with others to achieve this.
What is your favourite thing about what you do?
Nathan - I get to do what I love every day, and I get to share this with my life partner which is amazing. I feel like I’ve been making records now for over 30 years which is a nice big chunk of my life, the whole process has become more intuitive and easier. I trust my own judgement more and I worry less about what other people think. If people like it, cool - if not, fine also. You can’t please everyone!
Jaimie - Making people happy! Connection with people, helping them to feel something, to feel good about themselves, to feel love, to have fun and to enjoy having self-expression and feeling comfortable in their own skin, either through what they wear or letting loose on a dance floor! In turn this makes me happy. I love to help create magical moments and memories that will last a lifetime and getting to do this with Nathan makes it all the more special.
What made you reach out after your experience of the Jimny 5-Door on Great Barrier over the summer?
Nathan - Jaimie has always loved the Jimny so when we got to spend the week with one on Great Barrier earlier this year, we hoped we would be able to work with Suzuki and spend some quality time with one in the family. It turns out the Jimny is a perfect fit for us!
Jaimie - We reached out because I have always loved the look of the 3-Door Jimny and have always said so to Nathan. It had been some time since I spoke loudly about a modern car! When we got a chance to try the 5-Door we were so excited. Being a bit bigger works for family life and is capable of fitting in large speakers and our musical equipment for events, plus racks of Jaimie garments. We see it as a perfect city car as opposed to off-road which is possibly not expected. It’s cute and nimble to get around in.
What is your favourite feature of the Jimny 5-Door and why?
Nathan - I love being high up and the ease of loading equipment in and out of the Jimny. It’s very practical but also looks cool. I can fit a whole load of gear in the Jimny for gigs which is essential.
Jaimie - I am a very visual person so this got me in the first place. I love the boxy utilitarian shape. Design is super important for me – great, simple elegant designs with function are key to how I work and what I create. I also love being so high up – like I am the boss of this town!
Has it changed anything in your life?
Nathan - Absolutely - it’s become a family member and is now our go to family vehicle for any excursion.
Jaimie - Yes! We are used to having our own cars and not having to ask “which car do you want to take today?’ Now we just fight over who gets to take the Jimny!
What’s been your favourite trip or experience in the Jimny so far?
Nathan - We recently drove to Raglan for a gig and it was perfect - 3 adults and all our gear in comfort and style and we used less than a tank of gas!
Jaimie - Like I said I actually love to drive it in the city the most. Having said that, we have taken it to many spots - Raglan for a big party, Ti Ari links and Mangawhai. It’s always a fun time, I feel safe, it carries our mates and we get asked a lot about it from strangers who are keen to know all about the Jimny and if they should buy one – which we of course say yes!
Nathan - I think the Jimny is a perfect blend of style and practicality. It ticks all the boxes and I think it’s a future classic :) (future classic yes!)
