A Brand New Story at the Tokyo Motor Show
Suzuki unveiled new concept vehicles at the Tokyo Motor Show in December. Each was based on the Suzuki slogan of ‘Small Cars for a Big Future”, and packed with unique leading-edge technology.
HUSTLER – A HIGH-ENERGY CONCEPT
Energy is the key to the Hustler concept – a new-genre crossover minicar aimed at people with a love of sport, nature and the outdoors. The stylish design is equally practical, with plenty of SUV touches. The effect? A small yet roomy vehicle that’s both comfortable, useful and looks like it belongs in the outdoors.
INDIVIDUALITY THE KEY IN iV-4
A lower medium size SUV was also unveiled at the Tokyo show: the five-door iV-4. The name gives a nod to the individuality of the vehicle, as well as it’s 4WD ability. It will feature Suzuki’s next generation all-wheel-drive ALLGRIP system and slot in between the Suzuki S-Cross and Grand Vitara. The familiar hallmarks of heavily sculptured lines, a clamshell style bonnet and the five-bar grille will all be there. But a high level of personalization will be offered, allowing owners to choose a range of roof and interior colours, and even a choice of texture for some body parts. iV-4 is planned for production in Hungary, but is not expected for New Zealand release at this stage.
X-LANDER WOWS THE CROWDS
The ambitious, playful looking X-Lander is based on the compact Jimny. The innovative four-wheel-drive is powered by a 1.3-litre engine and boasts a newly developed automated manual transmission. This futuristic take on small 4WD vehicles is intended to be as competent in the city as it is off-road, as well as being environmentally friendly.
CROSSHIKER OFFERS ULTRA-LIGHT RELIEF
Building on a crossover concept first exhibited in 2011, Crosshiker uses a next-generation lightweight platform to strike a balance between power, performance and the environment. It’s designed for the minicar category with a weight of just 810kg. The concept is described as “eco-friendly on the inside while having…a personality that would evoke passion in users.” In other words, a fuel efficient compact crossover with a playful, exciting style for those of us who want to be responsible but still have some fun.
