Fronx Combines Premium Features and Exceptional Efficiency for NZ Drivers

Suzuki has added a new dimension to its model lineup with the arrival of the versatile Fronx hybrid crossover-SUV.

The well equipped newcomer joins Suzuki’s other compact SUVs and majors on advanced safety technology, superb all-around visibility and effortless maneuverability. Suzuki invented the compact SUV class of cars 37 years ago and has continued to expand this popular category.

Measuring just under four metres, the Fronx combines a cutting-edge exterior with a visually striking interior with premium finishes. It comes with the latest Smart Hybrid self-charging technology and a new six-stage automatic transmission.

The car’s name tag, “Fronx”, blends the sounds and meanings of two words: “Frontier” and “Crossover”. With its bold and expressive look, the Fronx is well-positioned to make a strong impression in the New Zealand market offering the practicality of a SUV with the sleek styling of a crossover.

The front split lamp design gives the vehicle a distinctive and modern look, while the signature full-width LED tail lamp stretches across the rear for a seamless, dynamic appearance. At the rear, a premium finish is highlighted by the multi-colour outer lens and red opaline inner lens. Completing the design is a body-coloured shark fin roof antenna and 16” polished face alloy wheels, adding a sleek, contemporary touch.

MAXIMISING EFFICIENCY

Fronx features Suzuki’s familiar mild hybrid system that efficiently converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle to electrical energy during deceleration. When brakes are applied, generation output increases to charge the battery further. The automatic idle stop-start system stops the engine as the vehicle is coming to a stop, achieving further fuel efficiency. A belt drive realises a smooth and quiet restart without noise from the starter motor gears. Stored electricity drives the motor to assist the engine during acceleration, when fuel consumption is high, reducing fuel consumption.

Lightweight, compact and energy-efficient, this mild hybrid system is ideal for compact vehicles.

While boasting a comprehensive specification, Fronx tips the scales with a trim kerb weight of 1,055 kg. Based on the brand’s HEARTECT ‘B’ platform, Fronx incorporates a strong yet rigid body. HEARTECT comprises a smooth, curving form that dispenses impact energy due to being light and highly rigid while enhancing passenger safety.

PROVEN TWIN CAMSHAFT ENGINE

Powering the Fronx is Suzuki’s proven all aluminium K15C four-cylinder motor. The normally aspirated 1,462 cm3 power unit has twin overhead camshafts with dual variable valve technology. There are four valves per cylinder and cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and piston cooling jets enhance high thermal efficiency.

The motor develops 76 kW (101 bhp) at 6,000 rpm and 137 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm and in the official fuel economy tests is rated at 4.9 NEDC and 5.4 3P-WLTP litres/100 km. The CO2 emissions are 113 NEDC (125 3P-WLTP) and the power unit can run on 91 octane fuel.

Ventilated front disc brakes are complemented by solid discs for the rear wheels. The Fronx suspension employs MacPherson struts and coil springs at the front and a torsion beam and coil sprung rear suspension design.

HEADS-UP DISPLAY AIDS SAFETY

A heads-up display (HUD) - the first for a Suzuki model - projects information such as speed, warnings, fuel consumption and smartphone navigation guidance onto the HUD display in front of the driver, reducing line of sight movements for safer driving.

Fronx incorporates many other features to enhance driver comfort and safety. Dual sensor brake support (DSBS II) employs a monocular camera and millimetre-wave radar to detect turning vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians and other obstacles, as well as functioning during nighttime driving.

Other standard equipment includes adaptive cruise, lane keeping, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition and blind spot monitoring for safer lane changing. The rear cross traffic alert operates when reversing at speeds up to 8 km/h, with rear-mounted side radar sensors warning of approaching vehicles from either side, providing both visual and audio signals.

Comprehensive all-round vision is afforded by the 360 degree and reversing cameras. Infotainment is provided by the nine-inch touchscreen displaying digital connectivity needs, including fuel consumption, hybrid energy flow, wireless Android Auto and Apply Car Play, along with satellite navigation via Smartphone connection.

Wireless phone charging is centrally located into the lower tray and USB ports are positioned in the front console and behind the centre armrest for rear seat passengers.

WHERE STYLE MEETS FUNCTIONALITY

There is no shortage of interior accommodation with expansive head and leg-room and flexible load space. Standard equipment includes an adjustable height and reach steering column, leather-covered multi-function steering wheel and heated, individually controlled front seats. There are illuminated dual vanity mirrors in the sun visors and additional lighting in the glove compartment and front footwells.

There is seating capacity for five and the luggage volume is rated at 605 litres with the rear seats folded and 304 litres when the rear seats are raised.

Automatic light-sensing LED multi-reflector headlamps turn on with nightfall or low light. High beam assist dips the headlamps when oncoming traffic approaches. Guide-me lighting illuminates for a short while when occupants leave the vehicle.

The Fronx interior is primed with integrated technology and advanced innovation, from the contrasting cabin trim finishes to the prominent infotainment screen. A switch activates the electric parking brake. When moving off, the brake releases automatically for a smooth takeoff. A brake hold function temporarily keeps the car stationary when activated.

Suzuki is offering the new Fronx in a choice of seven colours. Opulent Red, Lucent Orange and Splendid Silver are all Pearl Metallics with a Bluish Black Pearl roof finish. Bluish Black and Arctic White are Pearlescent paintwork while Grandeur Grey and Celestial Blue are finished in Pearl Metallic.

The Fronx is offered in a singular GLX grade which has a special introductory recommended retail price of $29,990 plus on-road costs and comes as standard with Suzuki’s comprehensive three year/100,000 km new vehicle warranty, and an additional two year powertrain warranty extension and roadside-assist for a total of five years. Specifying a two-tone black roof paint option incurs a $1,000 price increase.
