Congratulations Matt on winning the "Sportsman of the Year - 2009" award for Cullinane College!
As the Suzuki Swift Sport Cup enters its third successful season to become a stand alone series and one of the most highly contested events on the New Zealand Motorsport calendar, Wanganui teenager Matt Gibson was selected as the winner of the 2009/10 Castrol Suzuki Scholarship.
The personable 18 year-old Cullinane College student, known simply as Matty to his friends, had already shown his prowess in karting, Formula First and Formula Ford before getting behind the wheel of a Swift Sport. His karting career began when he was 12, winning the First Club Championships in Manawatu before moving to Formula First at 16. Success in this field led to several podium finishes, a class lap record at Pukekohe, and pole position at every circuit, finishing fourth in overall in the national championship last season.
Matt’s ultimate dream is to become a world touring car driver and, given his strong focus and dedication, it’s a dream that should soon come true. As the third recipient of the Castrol Suzuki Scholarship, Matt’s career is certainly now in overdrive.
