Suzuki Track Day Fun
22 September 2008
The incessant rain has stopped; there are buds on the trees: spring is in the air. It’s at this time of year motorcyclists head out for weekend tours. And if they are Suzuki owners, they also start thinking about the next Suzuki Track Day.
Suzuki Track Days provide owners of Suzuki motorcycles the opportunity to discover the potential of their bikes (and themselves) in a safe, controlled environment.
As the Suzuki Track Days are held on motor racing circuits, it is no surprise that the GSX-R sporting range of Suzuki is very well represented. But that does not stop owners of GN250 commuter bikes, RGV250 two-strokes, GSX400 Impulses, Boulevards, from the S40 through to the mighty M109R or Suzuki Bandit owners from turning up in numbers either. In fact, at Suzuki Track Days held over the past two years almost every model of Suzuki has been represented.
Chris Riley from Suzuki Track Day organiser TNT Events explains that riders are segregated on ability rather than the particular model of Suzuki they are riding.
“We’ve had Boulevard owners out there in the faster of the Intermediate groups, so it’s not the model of Suzuki you own but how you ride it that determines which group you go in”, Riley says.
“We have one over-riding rule. As these are Track Days and not a race, we do not allow riders to pass others on the inside entering corners. So far this has worked brilliantly. The only injury we’ve had is one bloke who sprained an ankle running off at Taupo before his tyres had warmed up”.
Suzuki Track Days allow owners to develop better braking skills, among other things, in a safe environment.
To ensure things run smoothly, there are flag marshals on track and if someone does make a mistake, there’s an ambulance in the pit lane.
“It doesn’t matter what model Suzuki owners turn up on, at the end of the day they are all grinning from ear-to-ear,” Riley says. “And we’ve also noticed a trend for more women to come along for a ride, some of whom are now regulars”.
While most other track days will set participants back anywhere from $100 to $150 for the day, because they are underwritten by Suzuki New Zealand, the Suzuki Track Day entry fee is just $80.
The next date is at Feilding’s Manfeild Autocourse on Saturday, November 29 and according to TNT Events’ Chris Riley, this could provide the best opportunity yet for any Suzuki rider who has not yet sampled one of the Suzuki Track Days.
“While around a quarter of the available places have been booked, there is still plenty of room for newcomers,” he says.
